Understanding why positive male role models are critical for boys and young men who lack father involvement, and how mentorship can bridge this gap.
Boys growing up without involved fathers face a distinctive developmental challenge: they must construct their understanding of masculinity, male roles, and male identity without access to the primary template that most children use. This gap creates confusion, identity struggles, and vulnerability to negative influences that present themselves as alternatives.
Research demonstrates that boys without positive male role models are more likely to: struggle with anger management and aggression; engage in risky behaviors including substance use and early sexual activity; experience academic difficulties and dropout; and become involved with the justice system. These outcomes are not inevitable—but without intervention, they occur at elevated rates.
Positive male role models—mentors, coaches, teachers, community members—can provide the developmental experiences that boys need to form healthy male identities, develop emotional intelligence, and envision productive futures.
Observation and interaction with men who embody non-toxic, constructive masculinity.
Guidance in understanding and expressing emotions in healthy, constructive ways.
Exposure to adult male life paths and assistance in envisioning personal futures.
The C.H.A.N.C.E.S. initiative prioritizes connecting fatherless boys with vetted, trained male mentors who model healthy masculinity and provide the developmental support these young men need.
